한국화가 오산 홍성모 작품세계… 대자연의 미적질서 그 생명리듬

홍성모 작가는 봄에는 아름답게 피는 꽃을 그리고, 여름에는 시원한 폭포와 정자를, 가을에는 꽃보다 고운 단풍을, 겨울에는 눈 덮인 낙락장송을 그리면서 자연의 아름다움과 인생의 즐거움을 찾는 서정과 낭만을 소유하고 있는 화가이다.

Hong Sung Mo is a painter who has the lyricism and romanticism of seeking and enjoying the beauty of nature and the pleasure of life, depicting beautifully blooming flowers in the spring, cool waterfalls and arbors in the summer, beautiful scarlet-tinged leaves in the fall, and snow-covered aged pine trees in the winter.

홍성모 작가는 우리나라에서도 풍광이 아름답고 산물이 풍요롭기로 유명한 변산반도 부안에서 태어나고 성장하였다. 그는 아주 자연스럽게 매일 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 산천과 친숙해지고 그러면서 산천과 무성의 대화를 나누면서 부지불식간에 정경융합(情景融合)의 감정을 얻게 되었을 것이다.

Hong Sung Mo was born and brought up in Buan, Jeonra Bukdo, Korea, which is known to be rich in beautiful scenaries and agricultural/marine products. Naturally he familiarized himself and communicated with the nearby mountains and rivers, thereby becoming one with them both mentally and emotionally without knowing it.

그는 이렇게 대자연의 혜택에서 얻은 미적 감정을 표출하고자 하는 욕구가 충동했겠는데, 이것이 그로 하여금 화가의 길을 걷게 하고 거기서 즐거움을 찾을 수 있는 적의(適意)의 인생관을 가지게 하였다고 보여 진다.

This must have moved his mind, cultivating strong desires to express his feelings aroused by looking and living the nature. Eventually it seems his desires found a good outlet in painting pictures, thereby making his life full of happiness and joy as a professional painter.

그의 산수화는 사생을 중시하며 사실적 표현을 기조로 하고 있지만 그 궁극적 목적은 서정의 예술 경계에 두고 있는 것이 그 특징이다. 그의 산수화 창작은 산하대지의 기세와 춘하추동의 변환 등 대자연에서 미적 질서를 찾아 인생 의의를 밝히고자 하는 것이다.

This type of spirit in the traditional landscape painting shows up in his paintings. Hong Sung Mo works are all paintings from nature (drawn on the spot), and they are based on the realistic descriptions, while they are ultimately lyrical art works showing us what the nature wants to tell us.

필자는 십 수 년 전에 오산과 함께 사생여행을 다닌 적이 여러 차례 있었다. 때론 비를 만나게 되면 절집 처마 밑에서나 아니면 우산을 받쳐놓고라도 그림을 그리는 사생에 대한 열정을 볼 수 있었다. 그의 이러한 사생의 열정은 이제 무르익어 스스로의 필묵운용을 구사하고 있다.

Ten-odd years ago I had sketch trips with his time's. Rain or snow and even the hot sun or icy wind were no obstacle to Hong Sung Mo. He had the passion to draw under the eaves of a temple house, when it rained or snowed. He even drew with the brush wetted with his saliva when the water for drawing was frozen. Such a passion of his has now been ripe to show up in his current brush works.

그의 작품이 사람들의 주목을 끄는 것은 그가 사생과 전통기법에 대한 오랜 탐구와 연마로 얻어진 진솔한 화면 구성에 있다. 그가 섬세한 운필을 통해서 나타내는 때로는 농(濃)하고 때로는 담(淡)하기도 한 표현은 단순히 물상에 대한 외형의 표현이 아니라 거기에는 생명력이 부여되어, 살아있는 생명의 리듬을 전달하고 있는 것이다.

The reason his works attract people's attention is the sincere and honest construction of his pictures, which directly reflects the nature and his unique techniques to describe it. Expressions made by his careful brush working, dark or light, show not just the outer shapes of the objects but the rhythm of the objects made alive by him.

홍성모 작가는 동국대 대학원에서 한국화를 전공, 졸업했다. △개인전9회=인사아트센터(서울), 공평아트센터(서울), 갤러리 우림(서울) 등. 전북도립미술관 개관초대전(전주) 등 다수의 초대 및 단체전에 참여했다. 제12회 이당미술상을 수상했다.
