Kang Kyung-jun to play athletic coach in SHINee Minho, f(x) Sulli's SBS series

Korean actor Kang Kyung-jun will be joining a number of K-pop idols in an upcoming SBS TV series.

The "Salaryman, Cho Han Ji" star has been cast to play the role of a passionate athletic coach named Byun Kwang-min in SBS' "Beautiful You" (translated title), the show's promoter 3HW said in a press release Monday.

Byun (Kang) is a former pole jumper full of confidence with his strong athletic talent. He ruthless bully to both students and even has the nickname ‘crazy dog.’ However, Byun treats his fellow teacher, and his secret crush, So-jung (played by Lee Young-eun) with all his heart.

The producers from the show explained that they are sure that Kang is absolutely perfect for the character, and said Kang, who has enjoyed the original comic before, is confident about playing the role.

"Beautiful You," which will likely hit the airwaves this August, depicts the love story of Korea's gold-medal-winning pole jumper Kang Tae-joon (played by Minho) and Goo Jae-hee (played by Sulli), who disguises herself as a boy to help Kang revive his career.

Directed by Jeon Gi-sang of KBS' "Boys Over Flowers" and scenarist Lee Young-chul of MBC sitcom “High Kick!” series, "Beautiful You" will co-star actor Lee Hyun-woo and Ki Tae-young, INFINITE's L and ZE:A's Kwang-hee

The TV adaptation of the popular Japanese comic book, "Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana Kimi)" has also been adapted for a Taiwanese drama in 2006 and it had brought in high viewership ratings during its run.

Kang first made his debut as a model in a TV commercial and gained popularity in “Nonstop 5” (MBC, 2004). He last appeared in SBS' "Salaryman, Cho Han Ji" (2012).
