The fourth installment of the “Pirates of The Caribbean” series entered No. 1 on the May 20 to 22 weekend box office, according to findings by the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.
“Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane which opened last Thursday, topped the chart after bringing in a total 1,206,519 viewers in 1,005 theaters nationwide.
In the story, the wayward Captain Jack Sparrow returns once again to venture into new waters in search of the Fountain of Youth on order by the King of England. In the process, he meets with his past lover Angelica and her father Blackbeard.
The previous winner “Sunny,” which is a story of the youthful moment of seven girls in the 80s, was pushed back a step to land on second place after receiving a total 535,836 viewers in 606 theaters during the three-day period.
Starring Yoo Ho-jeong, Sim Eun-kyeong and Jin Hee-kyeong, the film starts with middle-aged woman Nami’s encounter with Chun-hwa, one of her pals from elementary school who is dying from cancer. In line with Chun-hwa’s final wishes, she decides to contact the rest of their pals from 25 years ago.
French-American action flick “Source Code,” also slid a step to take the No. 3 spot after selling 75,632 tickets in 382 theaters during the weekend.
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga, "Source Code" is about a soldier given the mission to find out the source of terrorist acts through future-oriented computer program Source Code that creates an alternate timeline allowing him to peek into the past through other people’s bodies who were at the scene.
The films in fourth to tenth place on the box office were “The Lost Blades,” “Officer of the Year,” “Father’s Love,” “Thor,” “Fast Five,” “Crayon Shin-chan: Super Dimension! The Storm Called My Bride” and “3-D Sex And Zen: Extreme Ecstasy.”
