“Meet The In-Laws” claims No. 1 on weekend box office

Korean film “Meet The In-Laws” debuted at No. 1 on the weekend box office chart from April to 1 to 3, informed the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.

“Meet The In-Laws,” a romantic comedy starring Song Sae-byeok and Lee Si-young which opened last Thursday, attracted 484,591 viewers after opening in a total 596 theaters nationwide on March 31.

The film is about cartoonist Hyun-joon (played by Song) meeting with the parents of his girl friend Da-hong in order to ask her hand for marriage. He is from the Jeolla Province but pretends to be from Korea's capital city of Seoul to impress his could-be in-laws who are from the Gyeongsang Province.

Deep-rooted regionalism which pits the southeastern Gyeongsang Province against the Jeolla Province in particular, had dogged various aspects of Korean society in the past, including the 1980s which is when "Meet the In-Laws" is set in.

“The King’s Speech,” the previous winner of the box office chart, was ranked second this time after bringing in 98,344 viewers in 341 theaters during the three-day period.

The film starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, is based on the true story of the late King George VI of England who, with the help of an Australian linguist therapist, got rid of his stammer in order to be able to address his people properly.

Mystery thriller “Julia’s Eyes” from Spain reached the No.3 spot after selling 89,382 tickets for the weekend since its opening last Thursday.

Starring Belen Rueda, Lluis Homar and Pablo Derquiis, "Julia's Eyes" is a story of a woman, who in the process of investigating the mysterious death of her blind twin sister, also starts to lose her sight.

Meanwhile other films that appeared on top 10 list were “Late Blossom,” “World Invasions: Battle Los Angeles,” “Little Black Dress,” “My Name is Khan,” “Little Fockers,” “Vanishing on 7th Street” and “Black Swan.”
