[REVIEW] MBC TV series “Twinkle Twinkle” - 1st episode

MBC's drama "Twinkle Twinkle" [MBC]

MBC TV series “Twinkle Twinkle” Sat-Sun 8:40 p.m. Where there is light, there is shadow. If Jung-won’s (Kim Hyun-joo) life could be called the light, Geum-ran’s (Lee Yu-ri) life would be called the shadow though the two were born on the same day. The first episode of “Twinkle Twinkle” focused on showing the contrasting lives of two women whose personalities, as well as the environments they live in, are opposite of each other. Jung-won, who comes from a rich family, a prestigious school and has a wonderful job, is confident and a workaholic who is more interested in achieving her dreams than getting married. Then there is Geum-ran who lives a stressful and exhausting life in general -- she is forced to give up college due to her troublemaker father and is hung up on marrying her boyfriend who has passed the judicial examination, believing he is her only escape. Even at first glance, the attention-grabber of the first episode was Geum-ran with her gloomy and tired expression rather than Jung-won who sparkled in every way. After pushing a heavy book cart around all day long, then coping with a boyfriend who shows complete disrespect to her, Geum-ran finally loses it and trudges back home while saying that she was 19 when she first became aware of the fact that she has no future. Those scenes, which lasted for several dozens of minutes, was enough to show the weariness and abandonment Geum-ran had felt during the past 10 years.

But Jung-won and Geum-ran will soon switch places and it will be Jung-won who will shift to darkness. That is where “Twinkle Twinkle” suggests an interesting question. Will Jung-won be able to stay cheerful and confident even after that happens? And will Geum-ran be able to find true happiness in a rich house she has been yearning to live in her whole life? The drama may already be showing us the answer -- that just like the soft streetlamp that lights up the road Geum-ran takes home as she walks with her good friend Dae-beom (Kang Dong-ho), exchanging their thoughts and words of encouragement, light may actually exist somewhere much closer than she thinks it does. Such seemed to promise that is what the drama will show in the future -- serve as warm comfort to those who are also walking through the dark tunnel of life -- quite an impression for the first episode. ※ Any copying, republication or redistribution of 10Asia's content is expressly prohibited without prior consent of 10Asia.
