“Barbie” 1st Korean film to grab best film award at Giffoni int’l film fest

"Barbie," starring Lee Cheon-hee and Kim Sae-ron, has become the first Korean film to be awarded as the best film at the coveted Giffoni International Film Festival.

Organizers announced on the website Tuesday that the movie grabbed the Gryphon Award in GENERATOR +18 section on July 24.

With director Lee Sang-woo wielding the megaphone, the 97-minute motion pic is based on the true story of illegal organ trafficking happening in the process of international adoption.

The shady and tragic film is the first commercial film by the director, who has made radical movies such as "Mother Is a Whore" and "Father Is a Dog."

Meanwhile, the GIFF is known as one of the biggest international teenage film festivals that brings in about 100,000 people every year.

Kicking off its 11-day run in Giffoni, Italy on July 14, the organizers invited some big name Hollywood stars such as Nicolas Cage, Jessica Alba, and Jean Reno.

The film, which has been invited for screening at last year's Busan film fest, will hit local theaters in the second half of 2012.
