Singer BoA will join YG Entertainment C.E.O Yang Hyun-suk and JYP Entertainment founder and producer Park Jin-young as a judge for a reality TV show aimed at discovering the next K-pop star, according to the show's promoter 3HW.Com.
On Thursday, 3HW announced in a press release that BoA, discovered and trained by SM Entertainment, has agreed to become one of the three judges for SBS' global auditioning TV program titled "Survival audition KPOP STAR" for which SM, YG and JYPE, the three biggest talent agencies in Korea, have come together.
"BoA is a true world star who was the first Korean idol to make Korea's name known to the world...... We're looking forward to her appearance on the show since she is considered the 'standard' of K-pop stars," the producers for "KPOP STAR" were quoted as saying.
"She'll be able to give commentary as a singer who has actually been on stage, different from the other who will be talking from a producer's standpoint."
BoA, currently 24, is considered an iconic K-pop artist who made a splash into the music industry at the young age of 13.
She is also considered the first Korean artist to make a major breakthrough in the Japanese music industry where she has sold over 10 million albums since her debut there in 2001.
Most recently, she wrapped up filming of her Hollywood debut film titled “COBU 3D” starring former “Dancing with the Stars” champion Derek Hough.
"KPOP STAR" will air in the format of a survival competition where aspiring artists will be judged on various aspects such as singing and dancing and the winner of the show will receive prize money and secure a contract with one of the three talent firms through which he or she will release an album.
Applications for the first preliminary round of auditions are currently available on SBS' website.
