[INTERVIEW] Girl group Orange Caramel

Interview with girl group Orange Caramel

Orange Caramel member Raina [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

My name is Raina. My real name is Oh Hye-rin. I was born on May 7, 1989. I have a brother who is three years younger than me but I haven't seen him for about two years now. I miss him and I heard that he's gotten quite tall since the last time I saw him. My parents were worried about a female high school student moving up to Seoul alone. But I was persistent and during my senior year in high school, I moved to Seoul from Ulsan and started preparing to become a singer. I lived with my grandmother in Seoul. Since it was an old house there were a lot of cockroaches and I had to wash at the faucet because there was no bathroom. The other members say that they like their homes better than where we live together right now but I like where we live together better.(laugh) However, the one great thing was that the house was near the pork intestine street in Wangsimni. I was a regular at this one restaurant where the vegetable filled pork intestines are delicious but the best thing about the shop was their leeks mixed with sesame seeds and oil. The most fun part-time job I've had was working at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. The store manager let me use the coffee machine and soon after I was able to make coffee by myself. I heard that the outfits for Orange Caramel would be colorful but when I saw them for the first time on the set of the music video...I had...(Lizzie: I thought that these were exactly my kind of clothes!) I'm used to the outfits now to the point where I will ask the color of the outfit I will wear that day. And many people recognize us thanks to these outfits. I hadn't realized that I actually was a celebrity to the extent where I answered 'Oh? I don't know?' when people pointed out that I was one. I think the best way to make your name known is to star in MBC's "We Got Married." I haven't thought of who I'd want as my make-believe husband. (What if it was comedian Jung Hyung-don?) Uhm...I want to star in the show even if I were to get a divorce and receive alimony payments. (laugh)I'm just not the cleaning type so I once even saw a swarm of flies form around some bananas I had left in my room. But when I was sharing a room with member Jung-ah, I thought that I had to constantly clean the room because I was the youngest. Right now I share a room with NaNa and Lizzie and I feel more comfortable because I'm the eldest. We usually clean our room all at once. A few days ago we cleaned our rooms to the point where our backs were hurting because we had just felt like it. (Did you guys sweep up and wash everything?) No, we just used water tissues...but it was a huge deal for us. I am jealous of NaNa's huge ribbon. I feel short whenever I stand next to NaNa [who is already tall] with her humongous ribbon. Wouldn't someone short like me look taller with that kind of ribbon?

Orange Caramel member NaNa [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

My name is NaNa. My real name is Im Gina. I was born on September 14, 1991. I plan on going to a club when I officially become an adult. Ah, I will wait until Lizzie becomes an adult. (Lizzie: Oh!! Isn't she nice?) I grew 20 centimeters in just one year thanks to banana milk. I don't like milk that much because I have a problem with digestion. But I forced myself to drink banana milk in one gulp because my mom made it herself and she wanted me to grow taller. Now that I think about it, I am really thankful to my mom. I'm the kind of person who becomes shy in front of new people and its awkward talking and laughing with them. I gave short answers to questions when we appeared on the talk show "Radio Star" and I became more comfortable after hosts Shin Jung-hwan and Kim Gura took care of me. I get asked why we all had the same facial expressions on "Radio Star" when my intentions were for all three of us to have express different emotions. But after seeing ourselves on TV...I noticed we all looked the same. We practiced our facial expressions after our company told us that 'Orange Caramel's look is important.' It feels like Raina and Lizzie are from a different world when I hear them speak in their regional dialect. I am somewhat used to it but the other After School members still find it interesting and amusing whenever they speak. The three of us have been sharing a room since we've been trainees and we can tell what the other member is thinking or feeling just by looking their gaze. If someone asks us a question we have to answer right away because we are all thinking the same thing. And if we aren't the first one to answer we'll be hitting the floor saying 'I was going to say that.' I'm not identified by an adjective like 'youngest member Lizzie' because I'm ranked in the middle amongst the other members. (Lizzie: By height?) Uhm, nothing like that but my fans call me chic NaNa! I remember spending almost all our allowance on eating pork intestines with the other members. We always eat pork intestines at this one restaurant in Sinsa-dong with this yellow sign and red letters. Our check comes out to several tens of thousands of won so we'll think of how to borrow money from the older members of the group so that we can eat more [pork intestines].The lyrics to the song “Curry” by Norazo are so funny. It's just the best! Also, they have really funny dancers and watching them is funny as well. (Do you like UV?) Who...? (Raina: Yoo Sae-yoon and Muzie...) Ah!!!! I really love them. I'm sorry, I'm not cool. I want to open a beauty shop when I get older. I learned about make-up and cosmetology before becoming a singer, which was quite fun. The name of the shop will be...Beauty Shop opened by former Orange Caramel member NaNa? (laugh) I am pleased with my big ribbon and nothing that I envy in particular. I am the tallest one and because of the huge ribbon on my head I stand out on stage! That is why I like it.

Orange Caramel member Lizzie [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

My name is Lizzie. My real name is Park Soo-young. I was born on July 31, 1992. My hometown is Busan. My dream was to become an announcer, so I worked as a teenage reporter for the association regarding the reunification of North and South Korea in Busan. Then, I was given a chance to audition as a singer. I am working on fixing my regional dialect but it comes out naturally when I talk fast. I make mistakes frequently. I have always wanted to put on princess-like outfits, like our outfits for Orange Caramel. It took a while for the other members to get used to them [the outfits] but I liked it from the start. I think it will be okay to refrain from [the princess outfits] for the next album because we're wearing it endlessly for our activities. (laugh) I'm a bit upset because it seems that the people don’t know who I am. The people recognize all the other members of After School on MBC every1's show "Play Girlz School" but when they see me they ask who I am. However, I gave a fan my autograph for the first time ever a few days ago. It happened when the other members and I went to go see movie "The Man From Nowhere" and this guy who recognized me came over with a piece of paper for my autograph. I was really touched because I was able to directly sign it for him instead of signing album covers. I am a good ping-pong player. I'm the type that likes to work out and learn new things like swimming, taekwondo and badminton. I learned how to play ping-pong with a friend at a place nearby during my vacation but I forgot how to grab the racket because it's been a while since I last played. I love to play practical jokes. This one time I placed a squishy plastic poo on my butt and went over to Raina saying, 'Ah! I have to poo so badly!!!' and dropped the poo on the floor. (What was her reaction?) 'Oh my!!' I like NaNa's huge ribbon but I also like my crown and flower. I personally like flowered hair ties or clips.
