K-pop idol Changmin of singing duo TVXQ will make his big screen debut in Japan, according to his agency SM Entertainment on Thursday.

A press release from SM announced that Changmin will play a North Korean spy who disguises himself as a college student majoring in engineering in the Japanese crime flick "Fly, Holding the Gold" (translated title) which is scheduled to open nationwide this fall.

"Fly," based on the novel by best-selling writer Takamura Kaoru, tells the story of how six guys get together to steal gold bars.

The pic, which cranked in last month, is directed by Japanese auteur Kazuyuki Izutsu and also stars actors Tsumabuki Satoshi, Asano Tadanobu and Nishida Toshiyuki.

Changmin made his singing debut in five-member boy band TVXQ in 2004 who is known as one of the most popular boy bands in the country and overseas.

He expanded his career into acting with his first lead role in SBS' TV series "Paradise Farm" which aired in Korea for two months in March last year.

The show also made its premiere in Japan in 2011 while the DVD of the show has placed within the top ten of Oricon's weekly chart.

Changmin is currently on TVXQ's three month nationwide tour in Japan titled "TVXQ LIVE TOUR 2012~TONE" which kicked off on January 18.
