“Kung Fu Panda 2” lands atop weekend box office

DreamWorks’ animation “Kung Fu Panda 2” debuted atop the weekend box office during the final week of May, according to Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.

“Kung Fu Panda 2,” which is the second installment of the "Kung Fu Panda" series, became the winner for the weekend after drawing in a total 1,502,952 viewers from 1,044 theaters nationwide.

Starring big Hollywood names Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Gary Oldman and Angelina Jolie as the voice actors, the film picks up from the story from Po the Panda training as the Dragon Warrior. He takes off on a journey with his friends composed of Tigress, Monkey, Viper, Crane and Mantis, to fight the evil peacock Emperor Shen who tries to put an end to Kung Fu practice.

Disney’s “Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane slid down a step from the previous week to take the No. 2 spot with 573,295 visitors in 768 theaters.

In the movie, wayward Captain Jack Sparrow goes in search of the Fountain of Youth by order of the King of England. In the process, he meets with his past lover Angelica and her father Blackbeard who compete with Sparrow to reach the destination.

Local movie “Sunny” was also pushed back a step to land on third place after selling 456,502 tickets in 564 cinemas during the three-day session.

“Sunny” starring Yoo Ho-jeong, Sim Eun-kyeong and Jin Hee-kyeong, about the youthful moment of seven girls from when they were in the 80s, has remained one of the top three films on the weekend box office chart for three straight weeks.

Other films in fourth to tenth place on the box office were “HEAD,” “The Lost Blades,” “Source Code,” “Officer of the Year,” "Mama,” “Father’s Love” and “I’m sorry and thank you.”
