Qualification Extended for Five More Years Until March 2, 2031
Strengthening Support and Collaboration for Developers and Distributors
On March 3, Smilegate announced that it has been re-designated as a self-rating operator as part of its support initiatives for the indie ecosystem and creators, and will retain this qualification for the next five years.
Having first obtained the qualification in 2023, Smilegate has now extended its status until March 2, 2031, through this renewal. The self-rating operator system allows qualified companies to classify game content ratings directly, provided they meet certain requirements.
Smilegate explained that this system has enabled it to quickly introduce both domestic and global indie games through its global game platform, Stove, while also operating the rating classification process efficiently.
Smilegate plans to further strengthen its platform capabilities with this re-designation. Centered around Stove, the company will support the service deployment of developers and publishers, reinforce collaboration across distribution and operations, and continue to introduce overseas indie games. Moreover, it will help domestic creators ensure that their works are competitive in the market.
However, games rated as "Restricted for Teenagers" or above are required by current law to undergo review by the Game Rating and Administration Committee and the Game Content Rating Board. A Smilegate representative stated, "We are supporting the entire process, including guiding developers who wish to release games under this rating through the review procedure."
