Trump Does Not Rule Out Deploying Ground Troops
Cites "Intelligence on Resumed Nuclear Development" as Reason for Strikes
Hints at Possibility of Further Large-Scale Airstrikes
On March 2 (local time), President Donald Trump of the United States indicated that he does not rule out the possibility of deploying ground troops to Iran. The deployment of ground troops would signify a willingness to enter into a full-scale war with Iran.
In an interview with the New York Post that day, President Trump addressed the possibility of sending ground troops, stating, "Other presidents have said, 'There will be no ground troops,' but I do not hesitate when it comes to dispatching ground forces," adding, "I say that (ground troops) 'probably won't be needed,' or, 'if needed, they can be sent.'
This is interpreted as expressing his willingness to send ground troops to Iran if necessary. Previously, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had responded to a question at a press briefing about whether U.S. ground forces were currently deployed in Iran by saying, "No," but added, "However, we are not going to debate what we will or won't do going forward."
President Trump emphasized, "Things are moving much faster than expected," adding, "We killed 49 people, and as you know, we accomplished in a day what we thought would take at least four weeks."
In particular, President Trump explained that the reason for the military operation against Iran was because intelligence indicated that Iran had resumed its nuclear development project.
He said, "We completely destroyed those facilities because Iran was trying to build nuclear weapons. However, we found that they were working on building nuclear weapons through enrichment at a completely different location. So it was time to make a decision."
Additionally, in an interview with CNN, Trump stated that the U.S. military is "completely destroying Iran," but also mentioned, "The big wave hasn't come yet." This is interpreted as suggesting the possibility of additional large-scale attacks by U.S. forces against Iran.
When asked how long the war would last, President Trump said, "I don't want the war to drag on too long," adding, "I always thought it would be over in about four weeks. We are ahead of schedule (progressing quickly)."
President Trump also stated that, since Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in military operations on February 28, it is now unclear who is leading Iran. He said, "Right now, Iran doesn't even know who is leading them," adding, "We eliminated 49 Iranian leaders."
