Actor Myung Kye-nam has been appointed as the governor of Hwanghae Province under the Committee for the Five Northern Korean Provinces.
On March 2, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced the appointment of the new governor, Myung Kye-nam, stating, "One of the reasons for his appointment is that his father is a displaced person from Gaeseong city, which was not recovered after the Korean War." The ministry added, "Governors of the Five Northern Korean Provinces have included military personnel, businesspeople, and politicians, but above all, the ability to communicate on behalf of the residents is the most important qualification."
The newly appointed governor Myung has a background as an actor who has worked in both the film and theater industries. He has served as CEO of Eastfilm and as the head of the theater troupe Wanjamuni. He also participated as a producer in movies such as "Green Fish" and "Peppermint Candy." In 2002, he was the president of the group 'People Who Love Roh Moo-hyun,' and during the 2022 presidential election, he supported candidate Lee Jaemyung.
The governors of the Five Northern Korean Provinces are vice-ministerial level officials who are nominated by the Minister of the Interior and Safety and appointed by the president. The annual salary is approximately 145 million won. There are five governors: Hwanghae Province, South Pyongan Province, North Pyongan Province, South Hamgyong Province, and North Hamgyong Province. The positions have continued since the committee was established in 1949 to manage residents who escaped from North Korea.
