Gochang County has selected the Kentish Plover (scientific name: Anarhynchus alexandrinus) as the "Bird of the Month at Gochang Tidal Flat" for March and is launching a publicity campaign to raise awareness about the importance of protecting breeding shorebirds and conserving the ecosystem of tidal flats in the spring.

The Kentish Plover is a small wader, measuring about 16 to 17 centimeters in length, characterized by its pale grayish-white plumage and brown markings. During the breeding season, the black bands around its eyes and chest become more pronounced. Its primary habitats are tidal flats and sandy coasts, where it mainly feeds on polychaete worms and small crustaceans.
In early spring, the Kentish Plover builds shallow nests directly on the sand, where it lays eggs and begins breeding. Each year, breeding activity by this species is confirmed in the chenier landscape of the Gochang Tidal Flat and around the Gochang Tidal Flat Botanical Garden area.
The Gochang Tidal Flat is a coastal wetland with diverse benthic organisms and gently sloping terrain, providing a space for migratory birds to feed and breed. Ongoing monitoring of breeding shorebirds such as the Kentish Plover demonstrates that the tidal flat ecosystem is being properly maintained and managed.
However, because the Kentish Plover nests directly on sandy surfaces, it is vulnerable to external factors such as flooding from high water levels, predation, and human disturbance. As a result, the importance of stable management of tidal flats and sandy shores during the breeding season is being emphasized.
An official from Gochang County stated, "The fact that the Kentish Plover returns to breed at Gochang Tidal Flat every year is evidence of its ecological value," adding, "We will continue our efforts to systematically manage the Gochang Tidal Flat, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and preserve its biodiversity."
