Busan National University (President Choi Jaewon) will actively promote the construction of a symbolic monument at the Miryang Campus to mark the 80th anniversary of its founding in 2026 and the 20th anniversary of its merger with the former Miryang National University. To this end, the university will launch a fundraising campaign with participation from members, alumni, and citizens, and President Choi Jaewon has become the first donor, contributing 10 million won to the development fund.
Currently, at the entrance to the Miryang Campus stands the 'Bimasang', a symbol of Miryang National University before the merger. However, since the integration, students, professors, and other members have consistently called for the construction of a monument featuring the 'eagle', the symbol of Busan National University.
In the 2016 New Year work report, the College of Life and Resources Science at the Miryang Campus formally proposed the installation of a new symbol to the university headquarters. In 2019 and 2020, discussions between the College of Arts and the university headquarters concretized the plan to build an 'Eagle Tower', but the project was delayed due to issues such as funding.
Accordingly, the university headquarters has decided that this year is the right time and will actively push forward with the construction of the symbolic monument together with the College of Life and Resources Science as part of the '80th Anniversary Commemoration Project'. The university is considering the creation of an eagle-shaped symbolic tower or a symbolic park at the entrance of the Miryang Campus to clearly convey the Busan National University identity. In the future, more specific implementation plans will be drawn up after gathering feedback from members, taking into account the location, form, artistic elements, and harmony with the surrounding landscape.
In addition, the university plans to foster greater understanding and support by running a donation campaign in which alumni, the local community, and citizens can participate, thereby reflecting the significance of the Busan National University and Miryang National University merger.
President Choi Jaewon said, "The construction of a symbolic monument at the Miryang Campus is both a commemoration of 20 years since the integration with Miryang National University and an affirmation of the Busan National University community's identity. By gathering the support of members, alumni, and citizens, we will ensure that the Miryang Campus becomes a space where the pride of Busan National University is shared."
Lee Yongjae, Dean of the College of Life and Resources Science at the Miryang Campus, said, "This has long been a much-anticipated project, even featuring in student council campaign promises. It is very meaningful that it is now being actively promoted in time for the university's 80th anniversary. We will move forward with overall plans, including the construction of an eagle-themed symbolic tower or symbolic park, by reflecting the opinions of members."
