AI, Robotics, and Smart Technology... Busan Port Gets Smarter

Busan Port Authority Accelerates AI-Based Smart Port Implementation
Hyundai Motor and Startups Begin Full-Scale Application of Advanced Technologies to Port Operations

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sang-geun) is accelerating the implementation of a 'smart' port by ramping up technological collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company.

On the 27th, the authority announced that it had held a technology seminar with Hyundai Motor Company under the theme of "Implementation of an AI-Based Smart Port" at the BPA main auditorium on the 26th.

This seminar was a follow-up to the "Technology Cooperation Agreement for the Implementation of an AI-Based Smart Port and Expansion of the Startup Ecosystem," which was signed on October 23. It was organized to share the technological capabilities held by both parties and to discuss practical cooperation measures for applying these technologies at Busan Port.

Through the agreement, the two companies plan to jointly accelerate the digital transformation of Busan Port, strengthen its global competitiveness, and establish a technology demonstration ecosystem for startups by combining BPA's expertise in port operations with Hyundai Motor Group's investment and support for internal and external startups in advanced technologies such as AI, autonomous driving, robotics, and UWB. UWB refers to ultra-wideband, a wireless communication technology with a very wide bandwidth.

AI, Robotics, and Smart Technology... Busan Port Gets Smarter At the Busan Port Authority-Hyundai Motor Company technology seminar for the implementation of an AI-based smart port at Busan Port, attendees including Jeong Wondong, Vice President of Busan Port Authority, posed in front of the camera.

More than 100 participants attended the seminar, including terminal operators at Busan Port, companies located in the port hinterland complex, and BPA employees, all of whom have practical technology needs.

Hyundai Motor Company, together with internal and external startups, introduced six advanced technology cases applicable to the port sector.

Movin showcased technology for connecting patrol robots in the port hinterland and terminals. Mobiltech presented digital twin integration using camera and LiDAR sensor fusion technology. Omelette introduced AI-based integrated optimization for port logistics and supply chains. AutoEL demonstrated low-cost, compact LiDAR-based autonomous mobility for ports. Wearbe introduced a UWB (ultra-wideband communication)-based safety system for the port hinterland complex. 3I Solution presented technology for applying neutron component analyzer-based scanners to import and export containers.

Participants showed great interest in the fact that advanced technologies proven in the mobility sector can be practically applied to port operations. There was active Q&A and exchange of opinions, and in the latter part of the seminar, a separate session was held for matching and networking between Hyundai Motor Company, related startups, Busan Port companies, and BPA departments.

Jeong Wondong, Head of the Management Division (Vice President), said, "We have agreed to continue concrete discussions on ways to apply technology between companies and institutions."

Busan Port Authority and Hyundai Motor Company plan to continue their cooperation by expanding technology exchanges, on-site demonstrations, and joint research, thereby accelerating the transition to a smart port at Busan Port and the spread of startup technologies.

BPA President Song Sang-geun emphasized, "Hyundai Motor Company's advanced technologies in AI, robotics, and autonomous driving will provide a new turning point for the smart transformation of Busan Port. We will build an ecosystem where advanced technologies can take root at Busan Port by communicating closely and strengthening cooperation."
