The forum was organized to share expert opinions on the overall Taebaek URL project and to gather feedback from local residents.
During the expert presentations, participants discussed topics such as an overview of the Taebaek URL project site, the necessity and direction of the URL project, international case studies of URL operations, strategies for communication with residents, and the economic ripple effects. In the subsequent discussion, there was consensus that active interest from citizens and efforts by project operators to achieve regional cooperation and communication are key to the project's success.
Citizen participants expressed their expectations for the project, asked about the progress of the preliminary feasibility study, and inquired about regional cooperation plans, urging for the prompt commencement of the project.
One citizen who attended the forum stated, "It was significant that renowned experts from Korea and abroad gathered to share project details and address local concerns, as well as to listen to residents' opinions," adding, "We, as residents, will continue to take the lead in supporting and showing interest so that the Taebaek URL project can begin as soon as possible."
A Taebaek City official commented, "Through this forum, we were able to confirm the expectations and hopes of our citizens," and added, "We will continue to prioritize citizens' opinions throughout the project implementation process."
Meanwhile, the Korean Nuclear Society, which had previously raised various concerns regarding the site selection process for the Taebaek URL, reportedly did not attend the forum on the day of the event despite an official invitation from Taebaek City.
