Seongdong District Expects to Ease Financial Burden for Families with Newborns
Seongdong District in Seoul (Mayor Jung Wonoh) announced on November 26 that it has removed the residency period requirement for eligibility for the "Seongdong-type Postpartum Care Expense" support program, which aims to reduce the financial burden of postpartum care for families with newborns and to help mothers recover their health.
On the 13th, Jung Wonoh, Mayor of Seongdong District, was seen with a child at the opening ceremony of the Haengdang La Cervo Public Daycare Center. Provided by Seongdong District.
After easing the requirement from at least six months of residency to at least three months as of January 1 this year, the district further abolished the residency period altogether as of November 12. Now, as long as an applicant is residing in Seongdong District on the date of application, they are eligible for support.
Accordingly, if a birth is registered in Seongdong District and either the mother or father has resident registration and is actually living in the district on the application date, the family can receive 500,000 won in postpartum care expenses. This change is expected to allow more families with newborns to benefit from the program. In addition to the cash support, a voucher worth 1 million won, which can be used at approved postpartum care businesses, is also provided. Mothers residing anywhere in Seoul can apply without any residency period restriction.
Applications must be submitted within 60 days of the birth registration, either by visiting the local community center or online. Online cash applications can be made through "Government24," and voucher applications through the "Seoul Mom Care" website. If applying in person at the community center, both the cash and voucher can be requested at the same time.
Since January 2023, Seongdong District has proactively provided 500,000 won in "Seongdong-type Postpartum Care Expenses" to all families with newborns, regardless of income. In 2024, the district supported 1,522 families, achieving a high support rate of 89% compared to the number of births, and receiving a very positive response from residents.
Jung Wonoh, Mayor of Seongdong District, stated, "We are committed to providing practical support so that every family giving birth and raising children in Seongdong can feel secure," adding, "We will continue to expand our policies to create an environment where everyone can give birth and raise children with peace of mind."
