On the 19th, DL E&C announced that key executives, including CEO Park Sangshin, recently met with President Marcos in Busan to discuss collaboration on the Philippine government’s core projects. President Marcos was visiting Korea to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
The main agenda of the meeting was exploring ways for DL E&C to participate in the energy and infrastructure projects being promoted by the Philippine government. In particular, the Philippine government is said to have actively welcomed the possibility of cooperation in the field of nuclear power plant construction, in response to both carbon neutrality goals and rapidly increasing electricity demand.
DL E&C has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Meralco, the largest power company in the Philippines, and is working together to introduce small modular reactors (SMRs) in the country. SMRs are next-generation nuclear power plants that are about one-hundredth the size of conventional reactors. Unlike traditional nuclear plants, they do not require large sites and offer higher safety, making them suitable for installation near industrial complexes and other areas with high electricity demand. With the recent surge in electricity demand in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), SMRs, as a carbon-free energy source, are attracting global attention.
DL E&C has built a strong relationship with the Philippines over the years. Since winning its first contract in 1993 for a gas desulfurization facility for the Philippine National Oil Company, the company has achieved a record 15 construction projects in the Philippines-the highest in the industry. Notably, in 2015, DL E&C completed the Petron Refinery Master Plan Phase 2 (RMP-2) project, commissioned by Petron, the country’s largest oil company. This was the largest plant project ever in Southeast Asia and demonstrated DL E&C’s technological capabilities and project management skills. The project was awarded at approximately 2.25 trillion won, making it the largest contract ever secured by a Korean construction company in Southeast Asia.
Park Sangshin, CEO of DL E&C, stated, “DL E&C possesses unrivaled technological expertise and a proven track record in the energy sector,” adding, “We are confident that we are the optimal partner for the energy projects being promoted by the Philippines.”
