Tracking Speech Development in Children with Cleft Lip and Palate
Demonstrating the Importance of Multidisciplinary Treatment

Ha Seunghee, a professor in the Department of Language and Hearing Sciences at Hallym University (President Choi Yanghee), has received the 2025 Best Paper Award from the international journal Archives of Plastic Surgery, published by the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.
The award-winning paper, titled "Speech Outcomes in 5-Year-Old Korean Children with Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate," analyzes the speech production abilities of five-year-old children with bilateral cleft lip and palate, a congenital craniofacial anomaly.
This study is recognized as a multidisciplinary research project that tracked the developmental progress of children over an extended period, in collaboration with the Department of Plastic Surgery and the Speech Therapy Team at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.
Professor Ha Seunghee stated, "Children with cleft lip and palate require multiple surgeries and complex treatments, including speech therapy, from birth," adding, "This study demonstrates how crucial it is to provide professional treatment services at the appropriate time for the normal speech development of these children."
She further emphasized, "A multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration between plastic surgeons and speech therapists, can maximize the effectiveness of early intervention."
Meanwhile, Archives of Plastic Surgery is an international journal published by the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, which annually selects outstanding research in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery for the Best Paper Award.
