According to the Namyangju Fire Station, a report was received at around 9:50 PM that an Ioniq electric vehicle was on fire in the Jingan-ri area of Jingeon-eup. The person who reported the incident discovered the burning vehicle while passing by the scene and attempted to rescue anyone inside, but could not find the driver and subsequently called 112.
The fire was initially brought under control 17 minutes after the report, at 10:07 PM. However, due to the nature of electric vehicle battery fires, it took additional time to fully extinguish the blaze, which was only completely put out at 11:19 PM.
The fire authorities deployed 16 units of electric vehicle-specific firefighting equipment, including drill lances, and mobilized 46 personnel to respond to the incident.
When the fire suppression team arrived, the driver was not found near the vehicle. However, upon arrival at the Byeollae site, the driver was seen crawling up from under a bridge about 3 meters ahead of the accident location and was handed over to the paramedics. The driver, identified as A (gender unknown), suffered minor injuries, including facial lacerations and lower back pain.
Immediately after being rescued, A reportedly stated, "I was driving under the influence," but said they could not remember the circumstances of the accident.
The police and fire authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident and the circumstances of the fire, based on A's statement and the results of a breathalyzer test.
