Exploring Strategies for the Preservation of Industrial Heritage and Sustainable Development
Taebaek City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Lee Sangho) announced on October 22 that it will hold a 'Policy Discussion on Preservation and Development Utilizing Mining Assets' at 2:00 p.m. on the 28th at the Small Theater of the Culture and Arts Center. This event is being organized in conjunction with Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province as a related event for the '2025 World Heritage Support Project for Mining Cities.'

Approximately 200 participants are expected to attend the discussion, including experts on World Heritage, local policymakers, research institutions, and local residents. The event will proceed in the following order: a special ceremony, a keynote lecture, thematic presentations, and a policy discussion.
The keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Lee Yeonkyung from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Yonsei University, who will speak on 'Policy Proposals for the Preservation and Development of Mining Industrial Heritage.'
Following the keynote, the thematic presentations will include: △ Dr. Kim Boram of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, presenting on 'Directions for the Preservation and Management of Taebaek City's Mining Heritage,' and △ Director Jung Yeonsu of the Coalfield Culture Research Institute, presenting on 'Sustainable and Balanced Policy Directions for Mining Heritage and Urban Development.'
The final segment, the policy discussion, will address topics such as 'Policies for the Preservation and Development of Mining Cultural Heritage, Strategies for Linking Regional Economic Revitalization, and Approaches to World Heritage Registration.' The session will be chaired by Lim Jaeyoung, Director of the Mining Area Development Support Center, with panelists including Jung Yeonsu, Director of the Coalfield Culture Research Institute; Kim Boram, Doctor at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO; Kim Jaeyoung, Director of the Korea Coal Mine Cultural Heritage Research Institute; Kim Taesu, Director of the Mining Area Revitalization Center; and Kim Chaeyoung, Director of the Taebaek City Cultural Foundation.
A Taebaek City official stated, "This policy discussion has been organized to shed new light on the historical value of Taebaek City's industrial heritage and to explore a new vision for the future to be shared with the next generation. We hope for the active interest and participation of many citizens."
