Democratic Party: "Considering Investigative Capabilities and Leadership Skills"
The Democratic Party of Korea announced its nominees for the three major special prosecutors (insurrection, Kim Keonhee, and Chae Sangbyeong): Cho Eunseok, former Board of Audit and Inspection member; Min Junggi, former Chief Judge of the Seoul Central District Court; and Lee Yoonje, professor at Myongji University Law School.
On June 12, the Democratic Party held a briefing at the National Assembly in Yeouido regarding the special prosecutors and stated that it had sent an official letter to the President recommending Cho for the insurrection special prosecutor, Min for the Kim Keonhee special prosecutor, and Lee for the Chae Sangbyeong special prosecutor.
Cho previously served as Chief Prosecutor at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office and as Director of the Judicial Research and Training Institute under the Moon Jaein administration. Last year, due to the suspension of Choi Jaehae, Chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection, following his impeachment trial, Cho acted as interim chairman in accordance with the Board of Audit and Inspection Act.
Min served as Chief Judge of the Seoul Central District Court from 2018 to 2021. He also held positions as Presiding Judge at the Seoul High Court, Chief Judge of the Seoul Eastern District Court, and Senior Presiding Judge at the Seoul High Court.
Lee is a former prosecutor and currently a professor. He served as a member of the Committee for Judicial and Prosecutorial Reform during the Moon Jaein administration.
Roh Jongmyun, floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party, stated, "We prioritized investigative capabilities and focused on selecting individuals with the ability to effectively lead a large special prosecutor's office. We also communicated with the Cho Kuk Innovation Party only to the extent of gathering information, in order to avoid overlapping candidates."
The Cho Kuk Innovation Party nominated Han Dongsu, former Director of Inspection at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office; Shim Jaechul, former Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office; and Lee Myeonghyeon, former Chief Senior Prosecutor of the Ministry of National Defense Prosecutors' Office, as candidates for the three major special prosecutors.
