Pretending to Be Employees of a Famous Investment Advisory Firm
Cut Off Contact After Receiving Additional Investments
A group that operated an overseas stock leading chatroom based in Cambodia and pocketed 2.4 billion KRW was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
The Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 3 (Judge Jeong Hyun-gi) on the 5th sentenced Song Mo (26), the sales team leader accused of joining a criminal organization, to 3 years and 6 months in prison and ordered a fine of 20.96 million KRW. Sales team member Lee Mo (39), who was also indicted, was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison, and Park Mo (25) was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison.
The court stated, "The defendants committed crimes through remote, non-face-to-face online chatting, which inevitably dulled their sense of guilt regarding the fact that their actions constituted crimes and caused significant harm to others," adding, "They inflicted damage on the victims to the limit."
They are accused of acting as sales team leaders in a leading chatroom operated by a Chinese ringleader in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from January to July last year, receiving about 2.4 billion KRW from 36 people. It is known that they used a fraud method by impersonating employees of a famous international investment advisory firm to gain the victims' trust, receive money, induce additional investments, and then cut off contact.
