A fire broke out at the Southeast Sea Fisheries Research Institute, which is under the National Institute of Fisheries Science, located in Sanyang-eup, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do.
According to the Gyeongnam Fire Department, at around 7:04 a.m. on the 2nd, a report was received from a tourist stating that black smoke and flames were rising from the Aquatic Organism Research Building at the institute.
Fire authorities who responded to the scene mobilized 48 personnel and 16 pieces of equipment, and managed to completely extinguish the fire by 7:57 a.m.
No casualties were reported as a result of the fire.
The police and fire authorities believe the fire started from laboratory machinery and equipment on the first floor of the research building, and are currently investigating the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
