한국화가 오산 홍성모 작품세계…종횡무진, 산하대지 정서 표출

오산은 수묵과 아울러 색채의 활용을 통해서 정서 표출의 범위를 넓히고 있다.

Osan extends his scope of expression by utilizing various colors in his works, which is the result of his life-long study of traditional uses of colors.

인왕산의 가을, 142×45㎝ 한지에 수묵담채, 2011

이 또한 전통 산수화의 용색(用色)정신을 깊이 있게 탐구한 결과이다.

His colors are well in harmony with his black ink, completing the beauty of the naturalness and freshness of the traditional landscape paintings.

오산은 과거의 산수화에서처럼 기암괴석, 명승절경만을 소재로 택하지 않는다. 종횜무진 동서남북 주류천하면서 산하대지, 산천초목을 다 대상으로 아우르고 있다.

Osan does not limit his subject matters to strange stones and famous sceneries as in the past traditional landscape paintings. He goes everywhere, in every direction, covering anything he sees in the nature.

이처럼 천하를 다 아우르려 하다 보니 화면은 넓어지지 않을 수 없다.

This makes his paintings wider and longer.

통도사의 아침, 1128×210㎝ 한지에 수묵담채, 2011

「통도사의 아침」은 대지 위에 끝없이 펼쳐지는 솔밭을 묘사하고 있는데, 수묵 선염(渲染)으로 그려진 청초한 소나무와 그 사이 자색 안개의 운무가 여름날 아침 분위기를 그대로 드러내고 있어 보는 이로 하여금 그곳을 가보고 거닐고 싶게 하고 있다.

"A Morning in Tongdosa Temple" describes an endless stretch of tidy pine trees, with light purple mist spread between them, showing an early summer morning atmosphere. It virtually tempts us to come over and take a walk in there.

소수서원의 겨울, 364×160㎝ 한지에 수묵담채, 2010

그리고 또 한 폭의 대작 「소수서원의 아침」은 천지가 은백색의 눈으로 뒤덮인 겨울 솔숲 뒤편에서 바라본 이제는 사람의 자취 끊긴 고서원의 을씨년스런 정경, 곽희가 말한 ‘참담하고 쓸쓸한 겨울’ 그대로이다.

‘A Morning in Sosu Seowon’ [seowon: a traditional private school and memorial hall for great scholars] is another big work depicting the great old school behind a winter pine grove covered with silver-white snow, which reminds us of Guo Xi(郭熙')s grim and desolate winter scenes.

오산의 이 같은 예술 성취는 30여 년의 깊은 탐색과 연마에서 얻은 결과이다.

Such artistic achievements of Osan's are results of the serious pursuit of his own artistic goals for over 30 years.

그러나 그는 여기서 안주하지 않고 종횡무진, 산하대지를 누비면서 더 높은 예술 경계를 넘볼 것이다. 오산의 예술 세계가 이 시대 가물거리는 ‘산수화’에 새로운 생명력을 불어넣는 계기가 되길 기대한다.

He will never stop to be content with what he has achieved. I expect Osan's efforts to bring a new vitality to the world of Korean traditional landscape paintings which currently seems somehow at a low ebb.
