Uncertainty Looms Over Resumption of U.S.-Russia-Ukraine Trilateral Talks
With the United States, which had been leading ceasefire discussions, now becoming a party to the war, the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire negotiations have hit a major obstacle.
According to Reuters and other outlets on March 3 (local time), Russia carried out concentrated attacks overnight on port and transportation infrastructure facilities in Odesa, a logistics hub in southern Ukraine. Although there were no casualties, cargo warehouses and containers used for road transport were damaged.
While Russia continues its attacks regardless of the ceasefire negotiations, there is growing concern that the United States and Israel's strikes against Iran could pose additional challenges for Ukraine.
As a result, the trilateral ceasefire talks between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine, which were expected to take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates earlier this month, have become uncertain. Since the United States, which had been leading the ceasefire discussions, has now become a party to the conflict, it is difficult to expect it to play a mediating role for the time being.
There are also concerns that if the trilateral talks themselves are temporarily halted or postponed, the ceasefire discussions may return to square one. Furthermore, as the United States has hinted at the possibility of a medium-to-long-term war lasting four to five weeks or more, there are observations that the supply of weapons to Ukraine could decrease.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, "We are aware that a prolonged U.S.-Iran conflict will affect the quantity of available air defense systems we have."
