Integration of the Muan Peninsula as Top Priority
Pledge to Donate Entire Mayoral Salary
Lee Hokyun, the Democratic Party of Korea's preliminary candidate for the Mokpo mayoral election in Jeollanam-do, held a press conference at Mokpo Citizens' Hall on March 3 and officially announced his candidacy, stating, "I will make Mokpo greater."
Candidate Lee presented a vision for Mokpo to become not just a supporting city but a strategic hub that completes the future industries of the southwestern region, emphasizing a core city integrating industry, logistics, and tourism.
As his first key pledge, Lee championed the integration of the Muan Peninsula.
He stated, "Mokpo, Muan, and Shinan must grow together for the southwestern region to strengthen its position," adding, "If the integration is agreed upon, I will not run in the next integrated mayoral election." He also expressed his willingness to accept a shortened term if necessary.
Restructuring the port functions was also presented as a major pledge. His plans include: ▲ Developing the new port as a hub for offshore wind power support complexes; ▲ Creating the southern and inner ports as marine tourism bases; ▲ Promoting Mokpo Port (Seonchang) as an international e-commerce logistics hub; and ▲ Specializing the northern port as a seafood industry belt.
Additionally, he pledged to attract a five-star luxury hotel, construct the new Mokpo-Yeongam Bridge, establish a 30-minute metropolitan transportation network, redesign residential areas and develop station districts, and strengthen the city's medical and educational competitiveness to expand the foundation for settlement.
Candidate Lee also pledged to establish a 100 billion won fund to support small businesses and promised to donate his entire mayoral salary to the fund if elected. Furthermore, he announced his commitment to root out the buying and selling of positions and business corruption, signaling a strong stance on integrity in administration.
He stressed, "This election is not a contest of individuals, but a choice to fundamentally transform Mokpo," and emphasized, "I will make Mokpo greater and help it leap forward as the core city of the southwestern region."
