Online Applications Accepted Until June 15
Grand Prize Awarded at 'Consumer Day' Ceremony in December
The government is directly soliciting ideas from the public in order to improve outdated laws and systems that infringe upon consumer rights.
On March 3, the Fair Trade Commission and the Korea Consumer Agency announced that they will hold the '10th National Consumer-Oriented Improvement Task Contest' to gather a wide range of opinions and ideas from consumers and reflect them in the improvement of laws and systems.
Any member of the public interested in promoting consumer rights can participate either individually or as a team of up to five people. Applications are open from March 3 until June 15. The contest theme is to propose improvements for laws or systems that require more consumer-oriented approaches. Those who wish to participate can submit an online application form and a proposal through the Korea Consumer Agency's contest website.
Now in its 10th year, this contest has served as a bridge connecting inconveniences encountered by consumers in daily life to improvements in laws and systems. For instance, the winning proposal of last year's 9th contest-'Improvement of Caffeine Content Labeling for Decaffeinated Coffee'-led to a significant regulatory change, requiring coffee with less than 0.1% caffeine content to be labeled as 'decaffeinated.' Other representative cases that were reflected in actual policy through this contest include the requirement to display essential ventilation warnings on burning incense products and the obligation to notify consumers if the volume of a food product is reduced.
The results of the evaluation are scheduled to be announced in September, and awardees will receive a certificate and a prize from either the Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission or the President of the Korea Consumer Agency. In particular, the grand prize winner will be personally awarded a certificate by the Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission at the 'Consumer Day' ceremony to be held on December 3. The proposed ideas will be used as foundational data for future policy development through consultation with relevant ministries.
