Resigns on March 4 to Run for Seoul Mayor
Final Directive of Term Focused on "Resident Safety"
On March 4, Jung Wono, Mayor of Seongdong District in Seoul, will approve the "2026 Comprehensive Safety Policy for Residents" as his final directive during his term, thus concluding his 12 years of service as district mayor.
On his first day in office as the 6th popularly elected mayor on July 1, 2014, Mayor Jung hand-signed his first official document-a plan to promote safety inspections of public facilities. Now, as the 8th term comes to an end, the focus once again returns to "resident safety," meaning his 12-year tenure both began and ends with a commitment to safety administration.
Last September, Jung Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu (center), jointly inspected a construction site in Seongdong-gu with Kim Younghoon, Minister of Employment and Labor (left). Provided by Seongdong-gu.
This "2026 Comprehensive Safety Policy for Residents" comprises 23 projects across five major areas: daily life, transportation, housing, industry, and safety education. Key initiatives include strengthening the operation of the 24-hour disaster and safety situation room, improving the pedestrian environment along Yeonmujeong-gil in Seongsu-dong, enhancing the Walking School Bus and Smart Crosswalk programs, improving housing conditions and sewer pipelines for vulnerable groups, and expanding safety inspections for small businesses.
Even as the mayoral term comes to an end, the district plans to closely review sustainable development strategies for all 23 detailed projects-including staffing and budgeting-to ensure there is no gap in safety administration.
Mayor Jung stated, "It is deeply meaningful to conclude my 12-year service with the same commitment to resident safety that I had on my very first day in office," and added, "Safety is not something that has a clear beginning or end; it is a continuous task that requires daily checks and improvements. Until the very last moment, I will carefully monitor the safety conditions on the ground."
He continued, "I hope that the administrative principle of prioritizing residents' safety, centered on the robust safety system we have built in Seongdong, will remain unchanged," and expressed his gratitude to the staff who have worked with him over the past 12 years. Meanwhile, on March 2, the Democratic Party of Korea announced its final candidates for the Seoul mayoral primary in the June 3 local elections: Mayor Jung, along with Assemblymen Kim Youngbae, Park Jumin, Park Hongkeun, Jeon Hyunhee, and former Military Human Rights Center Secretary General Kim Hyeongnam.
