Suspected ASF Case Reported at Pig Farm in Gayamyeon
On-Site Inspections and Drone Disinfection Underway
A suspected case of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been reported in Hapcheon County, Gyeongsangnam-do, prompting quarantine authorities to launch an emergency response.
According to Hapcheon County on March 3, as soon as a suspected case of ASF was confirmed at a pig farm in Gayamyeon on February 26, the county immediately convened a meeting of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to review the response status of each department and has since focused its administrative resources on strengthening quarantine measures.
Kim Yoonchul, the governor of Hapcheon County, is visiting the site in person to check the progress of culling and the actual conditions of quarantine control line operation.
Following the ASF confirmation, culling at the affected farm began at 8 a.m. on February 27. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and epidemiologists from the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency were dispatched to the site, where they conducted epidemiological investigations and assessed the status of control measures in parallel.
Kim Yoonchul, the governor of Hapcheon County, also visited the site in person to inspect the progress of culling and the operation status of the quarantine control line. He thoroughly checked whether protective equipment was being worn, how work routes were managed, and whether emergency action protocols were being followed, instructing staff to ensure there would be no further spread.
The county, in cooperation with the Livestock Sanitation and Quarantine Support Headquarters, conducted drone disinfection at the affected farm and within the protection zone. It also reinforced internal and external farm disinfection, strengthened vehicle restrictions, and tightened control of personnel access. The governor additionally emphasized the need to address accumulated fatigue among on-site workers due to extended operations and to prevent safety accidents.
Governor Kim stated, "The success of quarantine efforts depends on the initial response," and added, "We will block any further spread through flawless quarantine and thorough safety management."
Meanwhile, centered around the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, Hapcheon County is maintaining a 24-hour emergency response system and is making every effort to block further outbreaks through intensive quarantine measures.
