Korea Joins Global Efforts to Set Autonomous Vehicle Safety Standards... Automotive Mobility Safety Society Hosts AI Expert Meeting in Seoul

UNECE WP.29 AI Expert Group Meeting
"AI and Autonomous Driving Require a Comprehensive Approach"

The Korean Society of Automotive Mobility Safety announced that it participated in the 6th meeting of the AI Expert Technical Group of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29), held over two days from the 5th at a hotel in Seoul. Many experts from industry, academia, and research institutes affiliated with the Society took part in the international discussions on autonomous driving and AI-based vehicle safety and exchanged views.

The Korean Society of Automotive Mobility Safety has consistently taken part in global consultative bodies that discuss international vehicle safety standards. UNECE WP.29 is a forum that consults and coordinates on international technical regulations and standards related to vehicle safety. As autonomous driving is expected to be commercialized in the near future, there is keen interest in what discussions will take place among AI experts under this forum. The Korean Society of Automotive Mobility Safety has contributed to coordinating international standards by directly participating rather than merely observing.

The meeting was attended by representatives of major regulatory authorities and international organizations, as well as automakers and research institutes, including from the United States, the European Union (EU), Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands. From Korea, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute, complete vehicle and mobility companies, and experts from the Society participated together.

Bae Hongsang, head of PAI Research and a member of the Society, gave a presentation at the meeting on the theme of "Automated Parking Technology and AI Safety." He shared with the international community Korea's technological implications, focusing on the characteristics of accidents that occur in autonomous parking environments, the limitations of AI-based perception and decision-making technologies, and the importance of ensuring AI safety in automated parking and valet parking technologies. It is being evaluated as a case that highlights the need to discuss safety standards for autonomous driving AI technologies not only for high-speed driving but also across everyday domains such as parking and low-speed environments.

Meanwhile, in connection with this AI expert meeting, the Society also participated for three days from the 2nd in the meeting of the Event Data Recorder/Direct Support for Automated Driving (EDR/DSSAD) Expert Group under WP.29. It examined international trends in data recording and safety standards for autonomous vehicles.

Ha Sungyong, president of the Korean Society of Automotive Mobility Safety, said, "AI and autonomous driving technologies require a comprehensive approach that goes beyond discussions of individual technologies and links accident recording, data, and safety verification systems," adding, "We will refine the framework so that experts from industry, academia, and research institutes in each specialized field can gradually participate in international expert forums, and we will continue to strengthen Korea's capacity to respond to international standard-setting discussions."

Going forward, the Society plans to cooperate with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Internationalization Center for Safety Standards at the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute to identify AI-based autonomous driving safety issues while analyzing WP.29 discussion trends. It intends to play a hub role in the process of establishing standards by engaging in activities that link these efforts with domestic policies and technologies.
