Gyeonggi Province collected 270 million won in overdue taxes through a comprehensive investigation of motorcycles owned by individuals and corporations with long-term tax delinquencies of 1 million won or more.
During visits to the addresses and business locations of delinquents as part of a survey into their actual circumstances, Gyeonggi Province discovered high-value motorcycles. However, it was found that systematic enforcement measures, such as seizing vehicle registration documents, were often not implemented for motorcycles.
In response, Gyeonggi Province launched a full-scale investigation into luxury motorcycles owned by long-term delinquents. In August, the province identified 723 motorcycles owned by 591 delinquents and notified the relevant departments in 31 cities and counties all at once.
From then until November, for about four months, the province worked jointly with city and county officials to conduct field investigations and on-site collection activities at the delinquents’ addresses and business locations. Of the motorcycles whose actual locations were confirmed, 338 were found, and through on-site payment encouragement and seizure actions, a total of 270 million won was collected.
Among the motorcycles seized on-site, many were high-priced imported models, including American-made Harley-Davidsons. The collection team immediately put up for public auction one motorcycle owned by a delinquent who refused to pay voluntarily.
No Seungho, Director of the Tax Justice Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will continue to investigate the remaining 385 motorcycles and hold the owners accountable to the end. We will respond strictly to tax evasion and establish a tax system where diligent taxpayers are respected."
