Chuncheon City Holds Working-Level Meeting for The Wave Project
Over 70% Completion for Uiam Neighborhood Park Lighting and Walking Environment Improvements
Public Parking Lot Along Uiamho Lake to Begin Detailed Design Early Next Year
Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Yuk Donghan) is accelerating the development of phase one infrastructure for the 'Uiamho Landmark The Wave Project.'
On December 3, Chuncheon City held the third working-level consultative meeting for The Wave Project in the conference room on the 8th floor of City Hall, where officials reviewed the progress of each project and discussed the upcoming implementation schedule.
The city is currently advancing the construction of phase one infrastructure. In September, the landscape lighting of Majang Dalbitgyo was turned on, transforming the nighttime scenery of Uiamho Lake. The lighting, which illuminates both the bridge and the waterfront in a three-dimensional manner, is being praised for establishing the area as a tourist destination where people want to linger even at night. During the same period, detailed water quality measurements and underwater ecosystem restoration projects were completed in the Gongjicheon area, leading to the release of 200,000 freshwater snails and 20,000 carp. The city believes these efforts will contribute to maintaining clean water quality and creating a sustainable tourism environment.
Other major phase one projects, such as installing landscape lighting in Uiam Neighborhood Park, creating the 'Lights of Romance' along Uiamho Lake, and constructing a circular overpass at the Hoban Intersection, have each surpassed a 70% completion rate and are progressing smoothly.
Projects to improve the waterfront walking environment and build an outdoor performance venue using local timber are also nearing completion. Starting next year, Uiamho Lake is expected to be transformed into a waterfront leisure complex, where visitors can walk, relax, and enjoy performances along the lakeside.
In particular, the construction of a public parking lot along Uiamho Lake-a core phase one infrastructure project-will complete its urban planning procedures this year. Full-scale construction is set to begin early next year, following detailed design and structural reviews. The city aims to complete most phase one projects by the end of 2026 and is expediting progress across all departments to meet this goal.

The Uiamho Landmark The Wave Project is a long-term strategy to transform the Uiamho Lake area into a tourism hub where visitors stay overnight, in preparation for expanded transportation networks such as the East-West High-Speed Railway, GTX-B, and the Second Gyeongchun Expressway. From 2023 to 2036, a total of 32 projects will be implemented in phases: phase one for infrastructure development, phase two for expanding specialized waterfront facilities, and phase three for branding and attracting private investment.
The city plans to combine Uiamho Lake’s natural landscape with night lighting, improved walking environments, performances, water leisure activities, and other cultural and experiential content, shifting the focus from day trips to overnight stays. This is expected to revitalize the local economy and restore vibrancy to the city center.
A city official stated, "We will ensure the smooth progress of the project so that Uiamho Lake becomes a place where both citizens and tourists want to stay."
