An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck off the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture, Japan. A tsunami advisory has been issued for the coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at around 5:03 p.m. on November 9, was located in the sea, 204 kilometers east of Morioka City in Iwate Prefecture, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, tremors with a seismic intensity of 4 were detected in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, and Wakuyacho, Miyagi Prefecture, as a result of this magnitude 6.7 earthquake.
Unlike magnitude, which indicates the absolute strength of an earthquake, Japan's seismic intensity scale is a relative measure that expresses how people in the area feel and how much objects around them shake during an earthquake. A seismic intensity of 4 means that most people are startled and ceiling-mounted lights swing noticeably.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that this earthquake could generate a tsunami of up to 1 meter along the coast of Iwate Prefecture and has issued a tsunami advisory.
