On November 9, in commemoration of Firefighters' Day, President Lee Jaemyung pledged to improve the treatment and expand compensation for firefighters.
President Lee stated on his social networking service (SNS) account on this day, "On the 63rd anniversary of Firefighters' Day, I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to all firefighters who have protected the lives and safety of the people."
He emphasized, "Even in unextinguished flames and amidst debris where the risk of collapse lurks, you have thrown yourselves in with the mission of 'First in, Last out' to save even one more life, and thanks to you, we have been able to feel safe. We will remember that our ordinary daily lives are only possible because of your extraordinary sacrifice."
President Lee continued, "When you protect the people, the nation will protect you. We will create a better working environment, ensure rational support and fair compensation, and strengthen the institutional foundation to safeguard your lives and health. We will also provide the honor and respect that befit your noble dedication."
He added, "I am thinking of all firefighters across the country who are doing their best today. I sincerely hope that you will always return safely from any disaster site."
He also said, "We will never forget the noble sacrifice of all those who lost their lives on the front lines of the field. Once again, I offer my deepest condolences and respect."
