On October 22, Gwangju City announced that it will declare the "2045 Sustainable City Gwangju Vision" at the "30th Anniversary Celebration of the Sustainable Development Council," which will be held at 2 p.m. on the 27th in the main conference hall of City Hall.
This event will serve as an opportunity to share the achievements of the past 30 years and pledge a new leap forward for the next 30 years, marking a significant turning point in Gwangju's development.
More than 600 participants, including representatives from Gwangju City and the City Council, civil society, local institutions and businesses, and members of village communities, are expected to attend. Together, they will demonstrate Gwangju's strong commitment to building a sustainable city model that harmonizes environmental conservation, social inclusion, and economic prosperity.
Since its inception in 1995 as the "Blue Gwangju 21 Council," the Gwangju Sustainable Development Council has played a pivotal role in realizing the values of sustainable development as a regional representative public-private partnership (governance) body based on cooperation among government, society, citizens, and businesses.
In particular, in response to the climate crisis, the Council has led initiatives such as citizen-participatory renewable energy transition, biodiversity conservation, responsible production, and the spread of eco-friendly consumption culture. It has also made significant contributions to enhancing social value by addressing inequality, strengthening the social safety net, and respecting cultural diversity.
At the ceremony, Gwangju City will unveil its "Sustainable City Gwangju Vision," presenting directions for future development across various sectors, including industry, education, youth, environment, and culture.
In particular, the "Story Forum," which will include citizens of various age groups, including youth and young adults, is expected to provide a meaningful platform for active communication about the future and sustainability of Gwangju, capturing the voices of its citizens.
Jung Hyunyun, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, stated, "The 30th anniversary celebration of the Gwangju Sustainable Development Council is an important occasion for Gwangju City to reaffirm its commitment to a sustainable future," and added, "We hope that many citizens will take an interest and actively participate."
