Exploring Urban Regeneration Strategies
Learning from NDSM Werf, a Global Success Story in Revitalizing Old Downtown Areas
Kim Tae-heum, the Governor of South Chungcheong Province, who is currently visiting Europe to attract foreign investment, visited NDSM Werf in the Netherlands, which is recognized as a global success story in urban regeneration, to explore strategies for revitalizing the original downtown areas in South Chungcheong Province.
On the 28th (local time), Governor Kim visited NDSM Werf in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and toured the site where abandoned industrial facilities were transformed into a complex space for culture and the arts.
According to South Chungcheong Province on the 29th, NDSM is an area where the city of Amsterdam has regenerated the large shipyard site formerly operated by the shipbuilding company NSM, established in the late 19th century, into a cultural district since 1999.
Currently, it is regarded as a leading example of urban regeneration worldwide, serving as a complex cultural and lifestyle district that integrates artist studios, startups, manufacturing companies, restaurants, and youth housing.
Governor Kim closely examined the facility's operations, methods of private sector participation, and examples of youth space utilization during his tour of the site.
He stated, "Since there are many idle buildings and deteriorated old downtown areas in South Chungcheong Province, creative urban regeneration utilizing abandoned buildings is necessary," and added that he would actively consider ways to apply such strategies within the province.
Meanwhile, with the visit to NDSM marking the end of his European trip, Governor Kim has returned to Korea. It is reported that the trip achieved results in various areas, including attracting foreign investment, international exchanges, and identifying best practices in urban policy.
