World’s First Platinum Rating
Setting the Standard for Green Factories... Industry Achievement
On July 25, Moorim Group announced that it had become the first company in the paper industry to receive the highest rating in the global "Zero Waste to Landfill" certification.
The Zero Waste to Landfill certification is a global standard that evaluates a company's resource circulation efforts and their level. UL Solutions, a global organization in the field of applied safety science, verifies the recycling rate of waste generated at business sites and awards Silver (90-94%), Gold (95-99%), and Platinum (100%) ratings. The Moorim P&P Ulsan Plant, which underwent the certification process, is Moorim's core facility and the only site in Korea that produces natural raw pulp. By recycling 100% of its waste without any landfill disposal, it received the highest rating, Platinum. This is the first time in the world that a paper company has achieved this.
This achievement is particularly significant because it means that a perfect eco-friendly system has been implemented throughout the entire process, from raw material procurement to product manufacturing and waste treatment. The Moorim P&P Ulsan Plant produces pulp using only wood from FSC-certified sustainable forests. During production, the by-product black liquor, a type of biomass fuel, is converted into renewable energy such as electricity and steam, enabling the production of Korea’s only low-carbon paper certified by the Ministry of Environment. In addition, most of the waste generated during production is recycled as soil conditioners or cement raw materials. As a result, the plant’s high level of resource circulation was recognized in this Zero Waste to Landfill certification.
Industry insiders expect that this achievement will not only set a new standard for what constitutes a true "green factory," but also, in conjunction with the government's strengthened decarbonization policies, help establish the pulp and paper industry as a leading eco-friendly sector.
In line with this eco-friendly trend, Moorim plans to actively promote its differentiated eco-friendly system based on its unique competitiveness in pulp production in Korea, and to build a more advanced resource circulation system through continued investment. As part of this plan, the company is currently investing 280 billion won to build an additional eco-friendly recovery boiler, a core facility that converts black liquor into green energy, at the Moorim P&P Ulsan Plant. Once this facility is completed, the production of renewable energy is expected to double compared to the existing boiler, and greenhouse gas emissions are also expected to decrease dramatically.
Chief Executive Officer Lee Dokyun said, "Achieving the highest zero waste rating is especially meaningful because it demonstrates that our entire production process has become eco-friendly, not just our waste treatment. The efforts we have made over the past 69 years have now been recognized by global standards, and we will continue to lead as a model company for circular resources."
