On July 8, Gyeonggi Provincial Government attended a meeting of the 17 metropolitan and provincial governments hosted by the National Balanced Development Special Committee under the National Policy Planning Committee, and proposed 15 key initiatives aimed at enhancing South Korea's growth potential.
This meeting, which began on July 7, was divided into regional sessions and served as a communication channel between the central and local governments to address the concentration of resources in the capital region and to shift toward local-led policy initiatives.
At the meeting, Gyeonggi Provincial Government presented several strategic initiatives for balanced national development. These included: participation in securing additional funding for the Local Extinction Response Fund; establishing a climate tech cluster in a peace special zone to enhance South Korea's growth potential; building a K-semiconductor mega cluster; supporting the coordination of AI, bio, and venture startup clusters; and proposing the expansion of underground railway projects and new national railway network projects.
Ko Youngin, Vice Governor for Economy of Gyeonggi Province, proposed a win-win strategy for both the capital region and non-capital regions by participating in securing additional funding for the Local Extinction Response Fund, specifically by utilizing a portion of the profits from various development projects in the capital region as resources for the fund.
He also emphasized that balanced development in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, which has endured both regulations and imbalances simply because it is part of the capital region?including the designation of opportunity development zones in border areas that have made special sacrifices for national security?will serve as the starting point for balanced growth in South Korea that goes beyond the current capital-centric system.
