On June 17, North Gyeongsang Province held a preparatory meeting at the conference room of the Eastern Government Complex, attended by representatives from the North Gyeongsang Fire Headquarters, Institute of Health and Environment, Coast Guard, and officials from cities and counties. The meeting aimed to review preparations for the safe and pleasant operation of 25 major beaches in the North Gyeongsang region.
Participants reviewed beach operation plans for each city and county, as well as safety support measures from the North Gyeongsang Fire Headquarters and the Pohang and Uljin Coast Guard. They also discussed the establishment of inter-agency cooperation systems, improvement measures to prevent safety accidents, and comprehensive preparations and safety management plans for beach operations.
Beaches along the East Coast of North Gyeongsang will open starting with four locations in Gyeongju on July 11. From July 12, eight beaches in Pohang, seven in Yeongdeok, and six in Uljin?a total of 21 beaches?will open and operate until August 24, for periods ranging from 38 to 44 days.
To ensure safe beach environments, North Gyeongsang Province has completed risk assessments and plans to deploy an appropriate number of safety personnel and equipment according to the size and number of visitors at each beach. Before opening, the province will also complete water quality and soil contamination inspections, as well as environmental clean-up efforts, to create a clean and pleasant environment for beachgoers.
In particular, to prevent jellyfish stings following last year's sharp increase in jellyfish sightings, the province will significantly increase the related budget compared to last year. Measures include installing jellyfish-blocking nets and expanding collection personnel, with all-out efforts planned to prevent damage from jellyfish.
North Gyeongsang Province is also preparing to reopen Songdo Beach this year, 18 years after its closure in 2007, following extensive restoration and infrastructure improvements. The province plans to revitalize the local economy by hosting various regional events, including the 'Pohang Yeongildae Sand Festival,' 'Pohang Wolpo Traditional Net Fishing Experience,' 'Gyeongju Midsummer Night Music Festival,' and 'Yeongdeok Daejin Summer Festival.'
Jung Sangwon, Director of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Bureau at the East Coast Headquarters of North Gyeongsang Province, stated, "We will strive to make the East Coast beaches of North Gyeongsang a summer destination that people want to visit again by ensuring they are safe and clean." He added, "We will continue to prioritize the safety and happiness of beachgoers and make thorough preparations so that visitors can enjoy the beaches safely and conveniently."
