Preserving and Managing Public and Private Records
of Jeonnam Province and Its 22 Cities and Counties
Jeonnam Province plans to build the Jeollanamdo Archives in Jangheung to ensure the permanent preservation and professional management of important records within the province.
The Jeollanamdo Archives is a local records management institution established and operated in accordance with the "Public Records Management Act," which requires metropolitan cities and provinces to permanently preserve and manage records under their jurisdiction.
The archives will be constructed on the Jangheung campus site of Jeonnam Provincial University, with one basement floor, four above-ground floors, and a total floor area of 13,474 square meters.
By building the archives on the site of the Jangheung campus of Jeonnam Provincial University?which was integrated and relocated to the Damyang campus in 2005 due to a decrease in student numbers?Jeonnam Province aims to utilize provincial land that has remained largely unused for about 20 years. The province also expects to generate synergy between national universities and public institutions by linking the project with the integration of National Mokpo University and Jeonnam Provincial University.
Once completed, the archives will enable the preservation, management, and exhibition not only of public records produced by Jeonnam Province and its 22 cities and counties, but also of private records from the region that have high preservation value.
After completing preliminary procedures such as military management plan changes, review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and deliberation on the shared property management plan, the archives is scheduled to begin design and construction in July 2027 and be completed in December 2030.
Kim Yung-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, stated, "Through the archives, I hope we can share and utilize the value of records with residents, providing an opportunity to better understand our region."
