Jeonnam Election Commission Reports Voter for Photographing Early Ballot and Sending to Acquaintance

Suspected Violation of the Public Official Election Act

A voter who secretly took a photo of their ballot at an early voting station and sent it to an acquaintance has been reported to the police.

According to the Jeollanam-do Election Commission (hereinafter referred to as 'Jeonnam Election Commission') on June 3, voter A has been reported to the police on suspicion of violating the Public Official Election Act.

A is accused of taking a photo of their ballot inside the polling booth on the second day of early voting, May 30, and sending it to an acquaintance via social media, thereby making it public.

Under current law, no one is allowed to photograph their ballot inside the polling booth. Violators may face up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 4 million won.

Additionally, voters are not allowed to disclose their marked ballots; anyone who violates this may face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 6 million won.

An official from the Jeonnam Election Commission stated, "Cases of punishment for photographing and disclosing ballots occur in every public election, and penalties for violators are being strengthened," urging voters to exercise particular caution.
