Government Vows Strict Action Against Acts Undermining Election Fairness... "Zero Tolerance Policy"

Key Enforcement Focus on Violations of Opinion Poll Regulations

The government has announced that it will take strict measures, including a "zero tolerance policy," against illegal acts that undermine the fairness of the 6·3 presidential election.

Go Gi-dong, Acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and Park Sung-jae, Minister of Justice, delivered a public statement regarding the 21st presidential election at the Government Complex Seoul on the morning of the 12th, the first day of the official election campaign period.

The government has identified the following as key targets for enforcement: violations of regulations related to opinion polls, dissemination of false information through various media including social media, and election-related violence. The government plans to mobilize all available resources across agencies to investigate these illegal acts under a zero tolerance policy.

Acting Minister Go stated, "The government will not tolerate any illegal acts or violations of election neutrality by public officials," adding, "We will strengthen inspections to ensure that public officials do not intervene in the election, and will take strict action against any illegal conduct."

Minister Park said, "We will thoroughly investigate and hold accountable any illegal collective actions, violent rallies, or obstruction of official duties by interest groups seeking to take advantage of the election atmosphere, as these undermine public order. Investigative agencies such as the prosecution and police will work closely with the National Election Commission to ensure that no illegal acts occur during the election process, adhering to the principle of zero tolerance."

Because this election is being held due to a presidential vacancy, the government also encouraged voter participation. The government requested, "Voters who are unable to vote on election day should participate in early voting, which will be held over two days on the 29th and 30th. We also ask that measures be taken at workplaces and industrial sites to ensure that workers are able to exercise their right to vote without hindrance."
