Collapse Occurs During Safety Inspection Following Crack Report
A collapse accident occurred at the Sinansan Line construction site in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong-si, Gyeonggi Province.
According to the Gwangmyeong Police Station in Gyeonggi on the 11th, at around 3:13 PM that day, a collapse accident occurred at the Sinansan Line double-track railway Section 5-2 tunnel construction site near Yangji Intersection in Gwangmyeong.
On the afternoon of the 11th, the underground at the Sinansan Line construction site in Iljik-dong, Gwangmyeong collapsed, causing the surface road and nearby shops to collapse. Yonhap News
Among the 17 workers at the site, 5 who were conducting safety inspections above the road temporarily lost contact. Of these, one was identified as trapped underground, and one excavator operator is reported missing. The remaining three were confirmed safe.
As the underground space collapsed, part of the road above and nearby commercial facilities also fell, but no additional casualties have been confirmed yet.
Earlier that day, at around 12:30 AM, a report was received that multiple central supports inside the underground tunnel, being constructed with a 'two arch (2 arch)' structure, had developed cracks. After the accident report, authorities completely restricted vehicle and pedestrian traffic on a 1 km section of the six-lane road from Gwangmyeong Yangji Intersection to Anyang Hohyeon Samgeori.
After the report, officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and POSCO Construction, the contractor, were conducting safety inspections to analyze the cause of the cracks and reinforce the construction site both underground and above ground.
