50 Books Provided Every Two Months
Basic English Classes Also Offered
Gwangju Nam-gu (District Mayor Kim Byeongnae) is promoting the Eutteumhyo Library project to support senior citizens' reading and cultural activities and to improve library accessibility for those with limited access.
According to Nam-gu on the 25th, the Eutteumhyo Library is a new initiative being implemented for the first time this year, and the project consists of two main components.
The project provides a book delivery service to senior centers in the area, and each district public library will carry out a variety of specialized programs, such as English special lectures, at senior-related facilities including nursing hospitals and welfare centers. The Eutteumhyo Library book delivery service will operate at 16 senior centers in the district.
To improve seniors' accessibility to reading, 800 books owned by the library, including large print books, dementia prevention books, and picture books, will be provided to each senior center in batches of 50 books.
The 50 books delivered to each senior center will be rotated every two months, allowing seniors to access a wide variety of books. In addition, magnifying glasses will be provided to help seniors read comfortably.
In addition, until June, four district public libraries will offer a variety of reading culture programs using books at senior-related facilities such as Nam-gu Senior Welfare Center, Inae Sarang's House, and senior centers.
At Pureungil Library, until next month, a senior cognitive play program will be held at senior centers, including picture book reading and brain-stimulating board games. At Hyocheon Eoullim Library, a mobile basic English class for seniors will be offered at Nam-gu Senior Welfare Center until May.
Furthermore, starting next month, the Youth Library will operate Harmony Silver Gymnastics at four senior centers, combining simple physical activities with music to help prevent dementia among seniors.
From May, the Culture Information Library will visit nearby nursing homes to offer picture book-based cognitive play, a traditional folk painting class, and a calligraphy class called "Drawing the World."
An official from Nam-gu stated, "We launched the Eutteumhyo Library to reach seniors who have difficulty visiting libraries," and added, "We will ensure that seniors in our district can enjoy a fulfilling leisure life with books."
