Gangseo-gu Selected as an 'Excellent Local Government' in Traffic Culture Index Survey Evaluation

Investing 4 Billion KRW Annually in Improving the Walking Environment and More

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon) has been selected as an outstanding local government showing remarkable growth among nationwide local governments in the ‘2024 Traffic Culture Index Survey Evaluation’ announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The Traffic Culture Index is a statistical evaluation of 18 indicators across three categories?driving behavior, pedestrian behavior, and traffic safety?targeting 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide. It reflects residents' awareness of traffic culture and the urban traffic safety network.

The district recorded a Traffic Culture Index score of 83.49, being recognized as the local government with the largest growth among basic local governments nationwide. This acknowledges the achievement of establishing a safe traffic infrastructure.

According to the survey results, the rate of drivers using turn signals was 79.79%, exceeding the national average, and the traffic safety ranking dramatically improved from 67th to 10th place.

Notably, the district significantly enhanced pedestrian safety through improvements in the walking environment. Gangseo-gu focused its efforts on creating a safe walking environment not only for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly but also for all residents. It improved school zones to create safe routes for commuting to school and also worked on upgrading elderly protection zones. The budget increased by approximately 1.4 billion KRW compared to the previous year, investing a total of 4 billion KRW.

Additionally, the district concentrated on securing pedestrian safety by creating pedestrian-priority roads on side streets to allow residents to walk safely and freely. Previously, Gangseo-gu was recognized for its efforts to improve traffic safety environments by being selected as the best district in the 2024 Seoul City Traffic Demand Management Evaluation.

This year, the district plans to continue investing a steady budget in maintaining child and elderly protection zones and will strive to improve the walking environment and enhance traffic welfare. Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon stated, “We will not be complacent with these achievements but will create a stronger traffic safety plan and pedestrian-friendly road environment, prioritizing the safety of our residents in Gangseo-gu.”
