Gwangju and Jeonnam Students Selected for Namdo Haksuk Dormitory
750 Residents Finalized for 2025 Academic Year
Competition Rate Rises Slightly to 2.6 to 1
The Namdo Scholarship Foundation announced on the 4th that it has finalized the selection of 750 new residents for the 2025 academic year at 'Namdo Haksuk,' a dormitory in Seoul jointly operated by Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province. Successful applicants and waitlist rankings can be checked on the Namdo Haksuk website starting today.
The selected residents include 377 from Gwangju and 373 from Jeonnam. A total of 433 students will reside at the 1st Namdo Haksuk (located in Dongjak-gu), and 317 at the 2nd Namdo Haksuk (located in Eunpyeong-gu). The group consists of 435 freshmen, 307 current students (including students with disabilities), and 8 graduate students.
This year's recruitment attracted 1,947 applicants (934 from Gwangju, 1,013 from Jeonnam), resulting in a competition rate of 2.6 to 1. By region, the competition rate was 2.5 to 1 for Gwangju and 2.7 to 1 for Jeonnam. This is a slight increase compared to last year's rate of 2.4 to 1 (Gwangju 2.1 to 1, Jeonnam 2.7 to 1).
For freshmen, the selection was based 100% on living conditions according to the median income standard set by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. For current students, academic performance accounted for 30% and living conditions for 70% of the selection criteria.
Successful applicants must pay the semester fee (for March to June) via a virtual account between the 4th and 6th, and move in between the 27th of this month and the 3rd of next month. If there are vacancies, waitlisted applicants will be admitted in order.
Namdo Haksuk was jointly established and has been operated by Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province in 1994 (1st dormitory) and 2018 (2nd dormitory) to provide a stable residential environment for university students from the region attending universities in the Seoul metropolitan area and to reduce the financial burden on their parents.
Currently, 1,454 university students (850 at the 1st dormitory, 604 at the 2nd dormitory, 725 from Gwangju, 725 from Jeonnam, and 4 students with disabilities) reside there. To date, more than 17,000 students from Gwangju and Jeonnam have lived in these dormitories.
