On the 3rd, KBS1 reported, "Recently, Sergeant A, affiliated with a military unit in Seoul, secretly took out a loan using the name of a unit member." The released closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed a non-commissioned officer entering the military unit's office and leaving with soldier B's mobile phone.
Sergeant A called the loan company pretending to be B and borrowed money. He used a small payment service worth about 1 million won through B's phone during early morning hours or borrowed money directly. B suffered damages totaling 30 million won, including the loans.
It was also revealed that Sergeant A borrowed money from other fellow military officers and did not repay it. A victim among the fellow officers said, "He admitted himself that he 'gambled.' The total amount of damage (to all victims) is around 200 million won."
The response of the unit after the incident has also become an issue. It is known that the unit only took measures such as surveys and education. Meanwhile, a video claiming that the problematic sergeant took out loans under someone else's name was spread on social networking services (SNS), and only then was the sergeant transferred to another unit.
The Army stated, "This is a criminal act caused by an individual's deviation," and added, "We will strictly handle it according to laws and regulations."
