The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (President Lee Hee-seung, KIOST) announced that its 'Hydraulic Laboratory' at the headquarters and the 'Marine Microalgae Analysis Laboratory' and 'Chemical Element Analysis Laboratory' at the Jeju Research Center have been selected as Excellent Safety Management Laboratories in the '2024 Safety Management Excellent Laboratory Certification Program.'
The 'Safety Management Excellent Laboratory Certification Program' is a system implemented by the Ministry of Science and ICT to strengthen the safety management capabilities of laboratories in research institutions and universities. It evaluates safety management levels and activities and grants certification to outstanding laboratories.
In this certification, KIOST's headquarters 'Hydraulic Laboratory' in Busan was newly selected as an 'Excellent Safety Management Laboratory,' while the Jeju Research Center's 'Marine Microalgae Analysis Laboratory' received its second certification since the initial certification in 2020, and the 'Chemical Element Analysis Laboratory' received its first recertification since the initial certification in 2022.
In particular, the 'Hydraulic Laboratory' is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental equipment, including a three-dimensional wave tank ten times the size of a tennis court, two two-dimensional wave tanks, and a variable slope flume. It can artificially generate waves and currents to evaluate the safety of marine structures and also test marine equipment such as underwater drones and ships.
KIOST stated that it will actively support fostering safety awareness and creating a safety culture within the organization based on this certification and plans to gradually expand the number of newly certified excellent safety management laboratories.
